Crossing the centuries, Ypsipyli discovers History. She wants to learn about the importance of Lemnos through the years. Her steps lead her to the Information, History and Maritime Tradition Centre in the port of Moudros.
A magistrate’s court, built at the end of the 19th century and then a primary school, the building that hosts the Information Centre since 2015 now guides the visitor with rich audiovisual and digital material through the maritime history of Moudros in the early 20th century. The Balkan Wars and the Allied campaign at Gallipoli come to life in a particularly impressive, interactive way before the eyes of the visitors. Descendants of ANZACs visiting the island find here the links that connect the events and understand the importance of Moudros during the First World War. The visitor to the Centre also receives broader information about the factors that influenced the physiognomy of modern Lemnos on an economic, social, political and cultural level; and finds out that, apart from the great moments of war, the integration of the island into the Greek state, the Russian presence on the island and the settlement of Greek refugees from Propontis and Asia Minor have also played their part.
